How To Get Your Kids Involved In Minimalism
The thirty-day Minimalism game is pretty self-explanatory. Start at the beginning of the month and get rid of items corresponding with the day. On the 1st get rid of one thing, on the 2nd get rid of two things, on the 3rd get rid of three things.
My family and I are playing the Minimalism game as a competition. We made it super fun. We dedicated a wall to keeping score, made a banner, gave each person a list to cross off the days, and we go over our piles each evening. Whoever plays the longest is the winner. The prize will be getting to choose an experience for the family to do together. Of course, you will want to make a list of choices so that the prize is within financial reason. The prize MUST include all family members so that everyone is rewarded for playing. Since the holidays are coming up, we will also be keeping a gift pile in case anybody comes off something that a friend or family member might value.
So We have four players and if we make through two weeks, will have become 420 objects lighter, created a lasting memory, planted a seed in our kids to enjoy the process, and will have given them a tool that works toward mindful living. Dare I hope that a tradition comes out of it? It would be great to do this every year before the holidays to clear out. It would also keep our minds on giving and gratitude as opposed to consuming and greed.
I am very excited about this.
