How To Keep Your Resolutions In 2019!

I love the beginning of a New year. People everywhere are feeling confident and motivated to make changes. This productive vibe is by far my favorite! Today I wanted to talk about the key component to not only accomplishing your goals, but to excelling far beyond them.

POSITIVITY!

I'm not saying you should turn into an unreasonably optimistic unicorn child of the rainbow kingdom. You need to stay honest with yourself about your flaws, your abilities, and your current trajectory. Then be positive about the changes you want to make. The truth is that we all have areas where we are not doing, acting, or reacting, the way that we should. Being real with yourself is not being negative, it is the first step to making beneficial changes in your life.

Honestly assess yourself, consider changes you could make to benefit yourself and those around you, then switch gears. Don't continue focusing on the flaws, focus on the action points that empower your future. Be real with yourself when you fall short and quickly move on in the direction that you want.

Make a list of the things in your life that are good and reflect on them often. Show gratitude to the people in your life for the ways they add to it. Take better care of that favorite pair of shoes or jeans you have. Take your pet on more walks or give your kids more of your time. Prioritize gratitude for what you already have.

Take action! If you notice something that pulls your thoughts down a negative path, first stop, take a deep breath, consider if there is a reasonable action that YOU can take to change this right now. If there is then do it! If there is not then move on.

Don't consider how others could or should change to fix a problem. You have no control over that; it's a mental trap. Depression in many moments is a choice. Choosing to spend your time thinking about problems without solutions, or with solutions that you cannot affect, is choosing depression. The facts are that you are a person, your life affects this place positively or negatively. You would have more than enough work to do in a day if you only considered the things that you really could change. If everybody focused on how THEY could make the world a better place, then the world would be a better place. Thinking about what others are doing wrong is a cop out of your own personal responsibility.

RECAP:

  1. Accurately assess yourself.

  2. Make a list of reasonable changes you can make.

  3. Be honest when you fail and get back on track quickly.

  4. Reflect on the good things in your life.

  5. Take a moment to give back to, or to take care of, those things.

  6. When you are unhappy with a situation, repeat steps 1-3

  7. Don't waste your time thinking about how others should change.

You are important, and you can change the world by being the best version of yourself that you can be. Don't stop changing.

Happy New Year to a Happy New You in 2019!
